Temperature travel

I was on a train heading for London on the hottest day of the year so far and there was no air con. The train took forever to reach its destination because it had to travel slowly due to the heat affecting the tracks. WTF? Earlier today a couple of Suffolk roads I was driving on started melting. I was worried my tyres would get tar stuck in the treads, effectively making them bald. What is with this country? Do we make stuff that will only operate within a given temperature? Any fluctuation in the temperature and trains stop running and we have traffic problems.
